Taekwondo is a Korean martial art and a full contact combat sport born between the 40s and 50s (as well as national sport in South Korea) based mainly on the use of football techniques, as well as the martial art that has the highest number of practitioners worldwide. Combines combat techniques aimed at self-defense and competitive practice especially as an Olympic sport, but also as an exercise and in some cases philosophy and meditation. In 1989 it became the most popular martial art in the world in terms of practitioners. The gyeorugi, a type of sparring practiced in taekwondo, has been an Olympic event since 2000.
